The Shanghai Swimming World Championships, themed "Water" and "Dynamic," left a deep impression on athletes from various teams. While the dynamic aspect of the pools has been fully showcased over the past days, the "water" itself hasn't received much attention. Yesterday, Chengdu Business Daily learned from the organizing committee that the water used in the pools, while seemingly ordinary, is actually quite extraordinary. The water in both the diving and swimming pools is potable! The water quality, from temperature and pH to filtration technology, meets or exceeds drinking water standards. No wonder there's a saying circulating in the World Championships' water treatment center: "Each pool at the World Championships contains thousands of tons of 'mountain spring water'!"
Level 1 Security at the Water Treatment Center
The athletes competing in Shanghai and the swimming fans may not know that the water in the pools is potable. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye! The "raw water" for the pools is ordinary tap water, but by the time it becomes the "drinking water" filling the pools, it has undergone a complex purification process. Yesterday, a reporter visited the World Championships' water treatment center located on the lower ground floor of the swimming venue. Security is extremely tight at the World Championships venues, and the water treatment center is the most secure area, as it directly impacts the athletes' health and performance.
The Oriental Sports Center, the venue for the World Championships, has two water treatment centers, located on the lower ground floor of the "Magnolia Bridge" (swimming pool) and "Moon Bay" (diving pool). Guided by Xing Gendi, a staff member of the World Championships venue operation department, the reporter felt like navigating a maze to reach the water treatment center. At the entrance of the water treatment center, three guards—two fully armed armed police officers and one security guard—were on duty. "This is a Level 1 security zone," said one of the armed police officers. "We understand that the water safety of the World Championships is crucial and absolutely cannot have any problems."
Potable "Mountain Spring Water" in the Pools
As the reporter expected, the water treatment center was filled with several huge iron tanks and a dense network of pipes. According to Xing Gendi, the pool water is purified through these, with four basic steps: diatomaceous earth filtration, ozone disinfection, activated carbon adsorption, and heating.
The filtration material is not ordinary quartz sand, but diatomaceous earth. "It was initially used in the beer industry, and using diatomaceous earth to filter water is currently the most advanced technology in the world." Compared to traditional methods, diatomaceous earth not only increases the filtration area by more than ten times but also completely eliminates the need for coagulants such as alum. "If alum is added, the water's surface tension will be very high; in simpler terms, it will be very 'oily,' and the transparency and color will be significantly different."
After filtration, the water undergoes ozone disinfection. The advantage is that it not only achieves instant disinfection but also the ozone evaporates after killing bacteria. In addition, considering the entry and exit of people in the pool, bleach and other chlorides are added for long-term disinfection, achieving "double protection."
After several rigorous processes, the water is no longer ordinary water. "I heard that the pool water can be drunk directly?" the reporter asked. Xing Gendi replied with a smile, "In terms of purity, it fully meets the standards for drinking water." But he added, "Of course, in terms of taste, our water is definitely not good, because it contains a lot of chlorine, but this is beneficial to health."
In terms of volume, the diving pool uses 4800 tons of water, and the swimming pool uses 3800 tons. It can be said that the pools at the World Championships contain thousands of tons of "mountain spring water"!
Water Treatment Equipment Costs 18 Million Yuan
To meet the needs of swimming competitions, the water at the Oriental Sports Center requires more than just "purity." Xing Gendi revealed that there are other indicators, such as pH and temperature. According to FINA regulations, the pH of the pool water should be between 7 and 7.8. Acidity is bad for athletes' skin, while slightly alkaline water is more comfortable for the body. The pH of the water in the swimming pool and diving pool is generally maintained at around 7.5, and real-time computer sampling, online monitoring, and automatic adjustment are implemented.
During filtration, the water treatment center also heats the water. "The internationally accepted standard is 26 degrees Celsius, with a fluctuation of 1 degree. We set it at 26 degrees Celsius, with a fluctuation of 0.3 to 0.5 degrees." Different temperatures are adjusted for different competitions: "Synchronized swimming is 28 degrees Celsius, and water polo is 27 degrees Celsius. Don't think that a difference of only 1 degree is insignificant; athletes will feel it clearly once they enter the water."
The Oriental Sports Center has three sets of water treatment equipment. The two sets located on the lower ground floor of "Magnolia Bridge" are all imported from the United States, costing 15.6 million yuan. Considering that the outdoor diving pool is generally only used in June, July, and August, to save costs, the equipment for "Moon Bay" is made in Beijing. The total cost of these three sets of equipment has reached a staggering 18 million yuan!
"Sea Athletes" Unadapted to Freshwater Pools
Thousands of tons of competition water have reached the standard for direct drinking water, which is truly luxurious! However, this high standard of water quality has presented a challenge for athletes from Antigua and Barbuda (referred to as "Anba"), a small island nation in the Caribbean Sea. Anba's athletes usually train in the ocean and are completely unadapted to swimming in freshwater pools!
The Anba team is the smallest among the participating countries in the Shanghai World Championships, with two coaches and three athletes representing their strongest "water army." Anba is an island nation where freshwater is precious. Coach Henry picked up a 350ml bottle of mineral water. "In our country, a bottle of water like this costs $1.25 (approximately more than 8 yuan)." Under these circumstances, filling a swimming pool with freshwater for athlete training is almost a fantasy. According to Henry, Anba has six swimming clubs, "all private, and only the rich can afford to swim." All pools are filled with seawater. Anba used to be a country without freshwater swimming pools! During training, the athletes said, "We all train in seawater, which has greater buoyancy, so we are particularly unadapted to swimming in freshwater pools."
